A new painting begins in my sketchbook, transferring ideas into a balanced composition and making decisions on colour and pattern. A clear, detailed drawing is followed by the moment when paint hits the paper, in a looser, more intuitive fashion - anything can happen!
The unpredictability at this stage is both exciting and challenging - that’s what I love about watercolours.
In the final stage, I add fine black lines to emphasise shifts in tone and colour differences, giving movement to the image and keeping the eye engaged. These intuitive marks are my favourite part of my process and define my artistic voice.
